The museum has two levels with a household flight of stairs between. The ground floor is fully accessible for wheelchair users and pushchairs. There is a stair-lift for access to the upper floor and a wheelchair upstairs. Pushchairs can be left downstairs whilst you visit the upper level, but there is no ramp. The Temple Mine is accessed via a short steep slope and there are steps inside. Therefore it is not accessible for wheel chair users or pushchairs. Young children will need to walk or be carried (please bear in mind that the roof is low in places).
There are public toilets next to the Museum.
There is a 2 hour stay pay-and-display car-park adjacent to the Museum and two other long-stay car-parks within a ten minute walk.
A visit to the museum usually takes around 1 hour, although some visitors like to spend much longer. The tour of Temple Mine takes 1 hour too. If you would like to visit both the museum and the mine allow at least 2 hours. Please see Temple Mine for more information about tour times.
Hot and cold drinks and snacks are available to buy at the museum. There are many other places to buy food and drinks in Matlock Bath.
Well-behaved dogs are allowed into the museum, if kept on a short lead. They are also allowed down the mine, but be aware that on busy tours they are at risk of being trodden on.
If you are organising a group visit you will need to book for both the museum and mine. Please click here to contact us. Otherwise, you do not need to book. However, please be aware that the mine tour has limited places, so you may want to call in advance to avoid disappointment.
We offer a discount for groups of more than ten. Please see pricing.
Yes. The Pump Room at the museum is usually available for schools to use for lunch. If it is being used and not available for your party, we will find a space to accommodate you. Please ask when you book your visit.
If you need to cancel your visit please give 14 days notice of cancellation by email. Failure to give 14 days notice may result in a charge being made.
